Welcome to Earth Month! This year, JAC and our EcoClub have made plans to celebrate with a variety of activities aimed at reducing our school’s overall consumption of energy and our overall generation of waste. These activities include:
♻SCHOOL-WIDE CONSERVATION CHALLENGE (APRIL 9 – 30) – Random classroom visits will check on energy consumption (ie. Are electronics off when not in use?, Are lights out when classes are gone?, etc.) and waste production (ex. are any recyclables in the garbage?, Is any garbage in the recycling bin?, Do your students use GOOS paper?, etc.). We will report on our progress throughout April and give tips for ways to conserve more.
♻LITTERLESS LUNCH WEEK (APRIL 16 – 20) – Next week we will encourage students to have litterless lunches each day. There will be small prizes handed out when people are caught being environmentally responsible.
♻EARTH HOUR (APRIL 23) – We will be conducting an Earth Hour where we encourage you and your students to not use electronic devices or lights for at least an hour. The start and end time will be determined closer to the date.
♻PITCH-IN SCHOOL GROUNDS CLEAN UP (APRIL 26) – You are invited take your class out to help clean up the school grounds. There will be a sign-up list in the staff room closer to the date.
Classes can get involved directly by contributing to our EcoSchool application! Here are some ways to do so (especially if you have a geography, math or science class!!):
Waste Audit – have your class conduct a waste audit
Classroom Lighting Assessment
School Energy Consumption Assessment
School Appliance Audit
Butterfly garden clean up and planting
Yearbooks can be pre ordered from Mrs. Minnema in the Library Room 212.
In honour of the victims of the Humboldt Broncos accident this pas weekend, the Board is encouraging schools to participate in the nation wide Jersey Day. To show our support to the community, we are encouraging students to wear their favourite jersey and to make a donation. All funds raised will be forwarded to the families of victims.
